Americas Next Top Model - Smile & Pose

This episode was mega boring, not much to tell (apart from Anslee still acting like a total dog), all the good drama happens in the next episode, with some serious slating from ALT. There were a few nice photos this week though, so I'll just post those and save all my ranting for the next post. Catch up on missed episodes here x

Music Monday - Brownstone

Who remembers singing this one, into their hairbrush?!

TWENTY : TWENTY with Ashes57

Tell everyone a little bit about yourself...

I am a Graphic Artist heavily addicted to bass music. I do line drawing illustrations, photography and paintings. I am a busy bee, I am getting involved in various different projects in the music industry. I have recently done artwork for Swamp81, the Wu Tang Clan and the Deep Medi website. I also work with Obey, currently documenting Shepard Fairey's work photographically. I have recently started curating shows with my friend Paddy Walsh under the LAVA Collective.

Favourite 3 albums of all time?

This is pretty hard to make up my mind because a lot of albums have influenced me for various reasons. But I would have to put the 36 Chambers first, I remember scoring the cd and listening it on my way to school and feeling a million bucks. Second would be the Third Eye Vision - Hieroglyphics, I loved it. And the third is Burial - Burial just a masterpiece.

So, we do kicks. Kicks is what we do. What were your first pair?

The first pair of kicks that I remember buying was on my 13th birthday. It was a pair of high top Adidas, black with white stripes.

With that in mind, (or maybe not!), who’s your style icon?

MIA

OK, turning to work… you have a chance to work with anyone you want, who? Why?

I would love to work with Michel Gondry on a stop motion movie. My illustrations with his skills would be awesome.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find my inspiration in music and in people.

Now from work, to play: where can we find you in the summer time?

I love going snowboarding during the summer. I usually go shoot videos in Mount Hood, Oregon for a few weeks. If not, I love going to parks or festivals.

Actually let’s better that, if you had to go and live in another country FOREVER, where would you fly & why?

I would choose New york. I used to live there and I feel like it was a perfect fit to my lifestyle.

Can you speak any languages to get by?

Just French but that is my first language.

If you were stuck there, you couldn’t leave – what song would keep you going nuts?

I would take a track from the Black Lips, I Saw A Ghost (Lean) from GOOD BAD NOT EVIL, it gives me energy, reminds me of my time lurking through New York City...but really I would take return to space by MALA.

Err, what kind of nuts?

Hazelnuts

And you’re still there, still stuck in the perfect abyss - what could you just not live without?

I could not live without the internet, my camera, my black markers and my notepad.

OK, you’re out of solitary confinement, let’s have some fun - what's the first thing you notice on a bloke?

One of the first thing I check on a man is his shoes. The style of the shoes can tell a lot about somebody at the first glance.

And on fellow girls, what do you check out?

.....

Everyone’s got someone right – so who’s the person you find hot but you really shouldn't?
Ahahahah I really can't drop a name there.

OK, work done, play is over. That was quick. Finishing up, mature hats at the ready – looking back, if you could give a younger version of yourself advice, what would it be?

I don't regret the path I took.

So finally, you may have already achieved a lot, you may have plenty more dreams to fulfill… but years down the line – how do you want your epitaph to read?

Everybody loves the Sunshine...

We've had nearly 1 whole week of beautiful weather now, about...freakin...time. Everyone's getting their legs out and we're totally positive that summer is on its way...though someone told me it's meant to snow next weekend, hopefully they were pulling my leg (my bare naked summer leg). Long live the sunshine, cos in the words of Roy Ayers "everybody loves the sunshine" x

KETCHUP!

So, we do kicks. Kicks is what we do. What were your first pair?

Well we were poor so they were plastic 'nicks' I was devastated, it destroyed my life back then… By the time I was 13 I scored a job on Brownhills market sellin knock off perfumes and make up, I saved enough from that to buy myself a pair of nike air max, silver and neon green they were, it was 95 so I was a chav back then, I had to be, I worked on a market n sold knocked off goods… I remember they cost me like 110 quid, I thought I was well pimpin till I put em too close to a radiator n the air bubble burst!

With that in mind, (or maybe not!), who’s your style icon?

I have loads of style icons, mostly I love those brilliant people who look like rainbows or  who don't give a shit and just pile it all on, but sleek is good too…

A few would be Siouxsie Sioux, Alwyn Harris, Neneh Cherry & all those ones who refuse to get 'made under' on snog, marry or avoid!!!

OK, turning to work… you have a chance to work with anyone you want, who? Why?

Hmmmm Alexander McQueen :( still find that so sad!!! He is massively inspirational, a real master of fashion… I wanna work with LL Cool J too, over n over n over again :) Jaoquin Phoenix & Benicio Del Toro could come too, surely you don't need to ask why…

Where do you find inspiration?

I am inspired by my mom Lorraine for being so full of love & my dad Pierre for being so full of poetry & wisdom, I'm also inspired incredibly by the kindness & strength of my nan Gloria and my nan Paulette's strength, creativity & glamour. Inspiriation is everywhere tho, people, places, music, memories, books, feelings, history, all of it…

Now from work, to play: where can we find you in the summer time?

This year spending the first bit of summer in London with my friends, working in the shop, making stuff and playing/dancing anywhere that the party leads me (CARNIVAAAAAAAAAAL) and then the latter part of summer I will be in New York (Brooklyn) for more of the same…Bring on the summer!!!

Actually let’s better that, if you had to go and live in another country FOREVER, where would you fly & why?

Not sure I could say that I would wanna live anywhere FOREVER, it's not a word that I'm comfortable with, I'm more of a here n now kinda girl… At the moment I'm in New York, I can't think of anywhere I would rather be right now, but I will feel the same when I go home and see all my friends & family so who knows where I will be in the future, still lucky enough to be travelling I hope...

Can you speak any languages to get by?

Well my dad is French/Moroccan and my mom is as English as they get, rosy cheeks, the lot… I speak French fluently, I'm pretty good at Spanish n Portuguese, bits of German… I've been lucky enough to visit loads of places n i'm pretty good at languages, I'm sh*t at maths & science to balance it out though…

If you were stuck there, you couldn’t leave – what song would keep you going nuts?

This answer is hard cos it really depends on my mood, can go from Bob Dylan to Elephant Man in no time at all, to keep me sane tho it would probably be Sebastien Tellier - La Ritournelle - it's probably the most beautiful song ever… or do u mean what song do I hate? If it's that question then anything with Akon in, he makes me want to kill myself…

Err, what kind of nuts?

Cashews, salty & sweet!

And you’re still there, still stuck in the perfect abyss - what could you just not live without?

Pens, paper, weed, love.

OK, you’re out of solitary confinement, let’s have some fun - what's the first thing you notice on a bloke?

Mouth and facial hair around it & then trainers, of course…

And on fellow girls, what do you check out?

Same as above :)

Everyone’s got someone right – so who’s the person you find hot but you really shouldn't?

Gordon Ramsey!!!! He's ugly and looks weird not in his chef's whites but he's so f*cking arrogant & powerful and good at what he does, he could swear at me anyday ;)

OK, work done, play is over. That was quick. Finishing up, mature hats at the ready – looking back, if you could give a younger version of yourself advice, what would it be?

Do not wear those stupid brown shoes with that black & white dress!!! Don't let anyone control you, respect everybody, ask questions, always keep learning, work hard, play harder, show people you care & learn to laugh at yourself!

So finally, you may have already achieved a lot, you may have plenty more dreams to fulfill… but years down the line – how do you want your epitaph to read?

My legacy in years to come will be SICK nursing homes, it's all about keeping the mind active so nuff bingo, karaoke n scrabble :) dancehall fridays maybe, that kinda vibe…

On the stone -

'C'est trop aimer quand on en meurt.'

Idiomatic translation: They love too much who die for love. Literal translation: It's loving too much when one dies of it.

Natalie 'Collide' Farouz loved it!

TWENTY : TWENTY with Suz P

Tell everyone a little bit about yourself...

I love art. I founded Over It & Co. I came to London to make my fortune.

Favourite 3 albums of all time?

This question is super hard! I could never say my favourite 3 albums, so i'm going to indirectly not answer your question...I’m a big fan of mix tapes. So my favourite mixtapes of late are Martelo’s best of the noughties, a series of gangbang mix tapes from DELS and tony touch’s jams.

Meat or veg?

Veg. Haven’t eaten meat properly for over 10 years.

So, we do kicks. Kicks is what we do. What were your first pair?

I think they were reebok classics. I’m grew up in a small town. Don’t judge me.

With that in mind, (or maybe not!), who’s your style icon?

Pat butcher and Slick Rick.

OK, turning to work… you have a chance to work with anyone you
want, who? Why?

I would have gone on a photographic surrealist adventure with Lee Miller and Man Ray, but they are both deceased, so that’s not going to happen. I would love to jam with Steve Powers and talk about Coney Island and love letters. His public art excites more than most work I’ve seen over the last couple of years. I’d also jump at the chance to sit down with Peter Blake and Eduardo Paolozzi and make some collages, but I’d have to settle with just Peter Blake as Mr Paolozzi is making collages in heaven.

Where do you find inspiration?

Everywhere and nowhere.

Now from work, to play: where can we find you in the summer time?

Most of summer 2010 will be spent on the roof of my studio, reading all the art books that I’ve neglected. Working in my studio. Seeking inspiration in galleries. Chillin’ in parks. Getting on a jet plane to LA for a few weeks.

Actually let’s better that, if you had to go and live in another
country FOREVER, where would you fly & why?

I couldn’t live in one place forever! I like exploring and falling in love with cities too much. But if I HAD to live in another country FOREVER, I’m move to a tropical island and build a Swiss Family Robinson house. No other city could match London, so I’d have to go for the polar opposite.

Can you speak any languages to get by?

I thought I could speak the smallest bit of French however on a recent trip to Paris I realized I can’t. My French is terrible. So, no, just straight up English, which is pretty tragic.

If you were stuck there, you couldn’t leave – what song would keep
you going nuts?

Talking Heads – This Must be the Place.

Err, what kind of nuts?

Brazil nuts. They’re a super food innit.

And you’re still there, still stuck in the perfect abyss - what
could you just not live without?

Cuppa Tea. Earl grey. Milk. No sugar.

OK, you’re out of solitary confinement, let’s have some fun -
what's the first thing you notice on a bloke?

Teeth. I’m in sucker for a dude with fucked up teeth. Gold tooth.
Cracked tooth. Half a tooth. Fanged tooth. Missing tooth. All drive me
crazy.

And on fellow girls, what do you check out?

Always the booty. Girls with too much junk in their trunk rule.

Everyone’s got someone right – so who’s the person you find hot
but you really shouldn't?

Goldie. Some people get it. Some people don’t. He’s got a mouth full
of gold teeth, don’t get much better for me.

OK, work done, play is over. That was quick. Finishing up, mature
hats at the ready – looking back, if you could give a younger version
of yourself advice, what would it be?

Don’t give a fuck about what people think of you. Be focused on your
craft. Make your work your world. Have fun. Kiss boys.

So finally, you may have already achieved a lot, you may have
plenty more dreams to fulfill… but years down the line – how do you
want your epitaph to read?

‘In it to win it.’ Gotta give some good vibes to whoever is reading it
innit? When you're dead it ain't about you anymore.

So, we do kicks. Kicks is what we do. What were your first pair?

Ooohh Kicks ... my favourite ... Gosh I cant remember but my brother had some Huarache's that were over sick, grey white and green i think they were .... SICK!

With that in mind, (or maybe not!), who’s your style icon?

Hmmm I really love Kanye's style y'know he's ever fresh .... and also Gaga is dope ... I don't care what anyone says!

OK, turning to work… you have a chance to work with anyone you want, who? Why?

I'd love to work with Stevie ...never thought about it until right now this instant minute but i don't really record beautiful piano led songs like he can write ... i think it would be beautiful ... and also pretty damn overwhelming! On the other hand .... Something with Nirvana would be scary as hell but dope all the same....

Where do you find inspiration?

Daily life generally .... I tend to write about what i feel but sometimes ... I write about what others might feel ... I guess its story telling in a sense.

Now from work, to play: where can we find you in the summer time?

On a chilled summers day you'll find me fighting of the bees at some garden pub in West....

Actually let’s better that, if you had to go and live in another country FOREVER, where would you fly & why?

Wow ... I really love NY because I really love London and they are so similar ... but  haven't spent enough time anywhere to know whether i could live ... I do like the sunshine tho .... ALOT.

Can you speak any languages to get by?

Hmm a little bit of French ...and a line of Gujerati.

If you were stuck there, you couldn’t leave – what song would keep you going nuts?

At the moment im always singing "I'm that lyrically farda name an mc that spits harrrder"- Breakage ft Newham Generals or "Par now i'll have to go blind" -Tempa T but to stop me going mad probably something by Emiliana Torrini.... Maybe 'At least it was' or something...

Err, what kind of nuts?

I'm good with a selection of Brazil, Almond,Walnut, Pecan, Hazelnut and a coupla Cashew... cheers.

And you’re still there, still stuck in the perfect abyss - what could you just not live without?

Walkabout Wednesday - Favela Rock

If there is any party in Melbourne that you can guarantee you'll bump into someone you know, it will be the monthly night that is Favela Rock. Opulent Magazine have been rolling out Favela each month for the past few years and although the crowd has varied slightly, they still endeavor to bring you the raddest night of the month with some of Melbourne's best DJ's (you can find one of the girls we love, Mafia behind the decks each month!).

Held at Miss Libertine's on Franklin st in Melbourne CBD, the place gets fairly packed out by the time the early morning rolls around and there are always specials on shots. So if you do find yourself down under and in Melbourne, head to good ol' Favs and tell them Kayta sent you!

Top Tip Tuesday - Got Curls?

Girls with curly or dry hair, holla if you hear me! I've grown up with a giant fro, and it's taken me nearly 24 years to perfect my haircare routine. I've found the best things for my hair are the following;

  • Water (obviously. Drink it.
  • Olive Oil - If you can handle having greasy hair for a bit, oil up your hair like its a treatment mask. Leave it in for up to half an hour and wash out with clarifying conditioner, not shampoo.
  • Ditch the shampoo - it ruins your curls.. it's best to wash your hair with a clarifying/cleansing conditioner and then conditioning with a moisturising conditioner.
  • Coconut - Coconut in any hair product is a good thing, and your hair will smell damn good.
  • No brushing - Unless you wanna end up with hair like Diana Ross. Leave it to settle after washing it, and comb it every few days.

Now go off, try it, and let us know how you go!
